HP Funded $3 lakh to 2 Indian education centres

BANGALORE, INDIA: HP announced today the addition of two Indian organizations, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham University and Learning Links Foundation, to its global HP Catalyst Initiative.

Under the initiative, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham University would join the Measuring Learning consortium, while Learning Links Foundation, the newly-formed STEM-preneur consortium, will explore novel ways to combine science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education with the skills and passion of entrepreneurship, stated a press release.

Single exam to replace multiple Engineering entrances

In order to reform the present system of multiple entrance examinations, a committee has been constituted to explore the possibility of having a single exam in place of the Indian Institute of Technology - Joint Entrance Exam (IIT-JEE), All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) and other state entrance examinations. This was stated by Minister of State for Human Resource Development D. Purandeswari in a written reply to a question.

Kurukshetra varsity issues notices to eight colleges

Kurukshetra University slapped notices on eight affiliated self-financed colleges for their inadequate infrastructure. Vice chancellor D.D.S. Sandhu said these colleges were issued temporary affiliations, but the university's inspection team found deficiencies in the faculty and student facilities in these colleges, which offered B.Tech, M.Tech, M.Sc. courses, besides others. Around 40 colleges, however, were cleared by the inspection team of the Kurukshetra University, some 110 km from here.

Scuffles at large British student protest in London

Thousands of students took to the streets in London to protest against government plans to raise tuition fees as police were out in force to prevent a repeat of violent clashes two weeks ago. The students, from all over Britain, gathered at London's central Trafalgar Square for a march that took them past a number of government buildings in Whitehall. There were scuffles and occasional clashes as tried to stop the marchers from reaching Parliament Square, which is flanked by the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey and Big Ben.

HRD ministry clarifies admission procedure for minority institutions

The Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry has received representations from several unaided and aided schools seeking clarification on the procedure to be followed for admission. The Ministry held a meeting with various stakeholders on the August 14, 2010 to elicit their views for formulating a guideline for admission, which would be consistent with the spirit of the RTE Act, specifically with section 13(1) read with section 2(o) of the Act.

'Garden of Eden' gave refuge to last men standing during ice age'

MELBOURNE: A strip of land on Africa’s southern coast — nicknamed the Eden— became a last refuge for the band of early humans who survived an ice age that wiped out the species elsewhere, scientists claim. Researchers have found ochre and evidence of shellfish, which reveal the earliest dated evidence of modern humans at Pinnacle Point. Referred to by experts as "the garden of Eden", it may have been the only part of Africa to remain continuously habitable during the ice age that began about 195,000 years ago.
